🇲🇾 #RestaurantReview: Authentic Nyonya/Peranakan Cuisine at Warong Old China | A Hidden Gem at Jalan Tun H S Lee 💎

Me and the hubs were having our own KL mini tour one weekend and we chanced upon this quaint Nyonya restaurant near Central Market/KL Chinatown!

We didn’t have any reservation but we managed to get a table instantly. Service was a little slow for us as they were jam-packed and busy when we came, but staff were very attentive to us and they were also apologetic about the delay.

We tried their Brinjal Special and Ayam Pong Teh and both were absolutely mouthwatering! (Tbh we don’t even know what ayam pong teh is… but I can guarantee you it’s really good and you should try it!)

Warong Old China doesn’t only offer delectable Nyonya food—they also boast a charming interior that transports you back in time. The restaurant is adorned with real antiques that create an really nice old-school vintage vibe. Dining there feels like stepping into a bygone era.

For those unfamiliar with Nyonya/Peranakan food, it’s a unique blend of Chinese and Malay flavors that originated from the intermarriage of Chinese immigrants and local Malays in the Straits Settlements. The cuisine is known for its vibrant spices, intricate flavors, and harmonious balance between sweet, sour, and spicy flavours.

If you ask me, I’d say you still have to travel to Melaka or Penang at least once to try authentic Peranakan food; but if you’re in the city and want to find the closest thing, this restaurant should be on your list ✅😉
